After months of renovations, a new restaurant has moved into the downtown scene. Located at 1100 W Front Street, Matlack’s has taken residence where PreFunk once was. The location may remain the same, but the “public house and beergarten” takes things a step further by offering beers, ciders, wines, and a stacked food menu of off-beat items you’re not likely to see in other downtown restaurants.

The menu features starters, salads, sandwiches and sausages, and even dessert. You’ll find interesting items, like the “Frito Yum Yum”- a blend of peanut butter, chocolate, caramel, and you guessed it- Fritos. But the general theme of the menu keeps an emphasis on smoked meats and comfort food.

“Kid-friendly, as long as your kids are friendly.”

Matlack’s is the result of previous PreFunk owner Justin Flynn joining forces with local general contractor and business owner TJ Sayles. The duo undoubtedly values looking upward as this is the third Boise establishment to be opened by the team, joining the likes of Prost! and North End Pizza, two of This Is Boise’s favorite spots.

The new eatery pays homage to Americana culture and the spirit of evolving. “Matlack” is a family name of Flynn’s. He was inspired to use the name as his family history is deeply rooted with hard-working Americans, dating all the way back to colonial Philadelphia.

Dogs are no longer allowed at the location, however, it is now a kid-friendly spot. In the words of Flynn, “We’re kid-friendly, as long as your kids are friendly.”

Matlack’s will be participating in Treefort this year, just without featuring any live music. Open from 11 am to 11 pm- ish daily, you can learn more about Matlack’s by visiting their Facebook page or following them on Instagram.
