Caught This Summer, Frozen Once

Bristol Bay sockeye runs June through August. Pride of Bristol Bay’s fish are harvested in that window, flash-frozen right after it comes out of the water, and vacuum-packed. That’s one freeze and not the thaw-and-refreeze cycle a lot of inland “fresh” seafood goes through.

Each case is labeled with the specific Bristol Bay fishing district it came from. Sockeye are ocean-raised, so there’s no feed, no antibiotics, and no dye. Kept frozen and sealed, it holds its quality well over a year.

About Pride of Bristol Bay

Pride of Bristol Bay is a fisherman-owned seafood company built around Bristol Bay, Alaska, which hosts the largest wild sockeye salmon run on earth. Because the company is fisherman-owned, the catch moves from the boats to the people eating it without a broker, a distributor, or a grocery chain taking a cut in between.

Pride of Bristol Bay is known for freshness and sustainability. The fishery behind it is managed river by river by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, which holds back enough returning fish each season to keep future runs strong.

The Idaho Ties Behind It

Steve Kurian moved to Idaho in 2002 for a forest management job. His landlord was a retired Alaska commercial fisherman, and the stories worked. Kurian quit and went north. Two years later he was captaining a driftnet boat.

He and his wife Jenn started selling fillets at farmers’ markets back east, then built a business around it: first Wild for Salmon, then Pride of Bristol Bay, which they bought in 2018. One percent of all sales goes to wild salmon conservation.

How The Buying Club Works

There’s nothing to join. It’s a group order with one bulk delivery to one location instead of individual boxes to individual doorsteps. Skipping the per-order shipping is what brings the price per pound down.

There’s one pickup on Friday, September 25th, 4–6 PM, at Payette Brewing Company, 733 S. Pioneer St. Everything is pre-ordered. The ordering window closes Monday, August 31st.
