The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic will soar into the skies of Boise, Idaho, from August 28th to September 1st, 2024. This public favorite local event, held at Ann Morrison Park, offers an incredible display of hot air balloons from all across the United States that bring some of the best photo and sightseeing opportunities in the early morning and night sky.

History of the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic

The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic began in 1991 and has grown into one of Boise’s most anticipated annual events, drawing balloon enthusiasts and spectators from all over the region. Balloonist Scott Spencer and Steve Schmader organized the first gathering of balloons at Ann Morrison Park as part of the Boise River Festival.

The event celebrates the joy of flight and the beauty of the Boise area.

2024 Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic Schedule of Events

Balloon launches take place early morning at Ann Morrison Park, so you’ll need to rise and shine to see this annual sight.

Here’s this year’s schedule:

Wednesday, August 28 – CapEd Kid’s Day
The festival kicks off with CapEd Kid’s Day, a special morning designed for the younger crowd. Starting at 7:00 AM, children can watch the balloons prepare for flight up close. At 7:40 AM, they can enjoy free tethered balloon rides, offering a unique experience they’ll never forget. This day is all about sparking wonder and excitement in the next generation of balloon enthusiasts.

Thursday, August 29 – Media Day
On Media Day, the action starts early, with balloons taking to the skies at 7:20 AM. While primarily focused on media coverage, the public is welcome to enjoy the morning sights.

Friday, August 30 – VIP Launch Day & Nite Glow
Friday is packed with excitement, beginning with balloons flying at 7:20 AM. Pilots arrive at 6:45 AM.

The evening brings one of the most magical events of the festival, the Nite Glow Spectacular. From 7:30 PM, Ann Morrison Park hosts food vendors, live music, and a festive atmosphere, culminating in the Nite Glow Spectacular at 8:45 PM. The sight of illuminated balloons lighting up the night sky is a sight!

Saturday, August 31 – Morning Launch
Saturday morning offers another chance to witness the beauty of the balloons as they prepare for takeoff at 6:45 AM, with the mandatory flight at 7:20 AM.

Sunday, September 1 – Final Launch
The festival concludes on Sunday with a special Dawn Patrol early start. At 5:15 AM, the last launch day of the 33rd Annual Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic begins. The Dawn Patrol and Inflation at 6:00 AM is a sight to behold, with balloons glowing softly in the pre-dawn light. The final flight is at 7:20 AM and closes the event.

Tips for Attending

  • Arrive Early: Balloon launches occur at sunrise, so arriving early ensures a good viewing spot and avoids traffic.
  • Parking: Consider public transportation or parking in designated areas, as parking can be limited.
  • Dress Warmly: Mornings can be chilly; dress in layers and bring a blanket if you plan to sit on the grass.
  • Bring a Camera: The balloons create incredible photo opportunities, so don’t forget your camera or smartphone.
  • Stay Hydrated: While food and drink vendors are available, it’s always a good idea to bring water and snacks, especially if you’re attending with children.
  • ADA Parking: ADA-compliant parking is available on Royal Street in the Ann Morrison Admin Parking Lot.
